  Acknowledgments

In the beginning, following the path of Stanley and Livingstone seemed a simple project. But over time, as it became clear through research that the story was not just about two men in Africa, but about a worldwide series of events, I came to depend on a small army of friends and associates to help me access all the necessary resources. This book could not have been written without them.

In New York, I owe a huge debt to two very important individuals. The first is my incomparable editor, Jason Kaufman, for his vision, patience, and perseverance. Jason, you're a genius. I salute you. The second is my equally spectacular agent, Eric Simonoff. He is a man of great business savvy, wit, and literary depth. This book could not have been written without him.

I'd also like to thank Bill Thomas at Doubleday, Miriam Abramowitz, and the stellar Dorothy Vincent at Janklow and Nesbit.

In London, my greatest pleasure was exploring the Royal Geographical Society's archives and library. A particular thanks to Sarah Strong at the RGS for her tireless assistance in digging up the many documents relating to Stanley and Liv
ingstone. Also, thanks to the British Library, where Stanley's original journals reside on microfilm. The staff at the House of Lords Archives and the British Newspaper Library were unfailingly helpful.

In Washington, thanks to Judge Russell E. Train, whose private collection of Africana offered valuable insights into Livingstone.

In Kuala Lumpur, Phil Kennington was a treasure trove of arcane information on all things British. So many facts, so little space. Thanks for the insights on gin, Phil.

In Sydney, thanks to Graem Sims and Peter Gearin.

In San Francisco, thanks to Gordon Wright and Austin Murphy.

In Tanzania, where the land outside the cities is still very similar to what Stanley and Livingstone traveled through, thanks to the people of Kigoma and Tabora, as well as to the police commissioner of Sumbawanga.

In Johannesburg, thanks to the very knowledgeable Diana Madden, for taking hours from her busy schedule to transcribe Livingstone's letter to Seward.

In Los Angeles, special mention to Bill Baker and Dave Jenni, who traced Stanley's path through Tanzania with me. Also, thanks to Julie and Ian Joseph Baker, Vicki Butler, Matt Dugard, Jim Garfield, Sean Scott, and Jeff Probst.

In Dallas, thanks to Cal Johnson.

In Coronado, a very special thanks to Sarah Harper at the Loew's Coronado. Also, a long overdue thanks to Marguerite Clark.

In Orange County, thanks to Denny Bellesi, Bub Kuns, and J. P. Jones for the spiritual insights into Livingstone. Thanks also to Ron Allen, John Dybsky, Steve and Cathy Cullen, Diane Hunter, Vernie Jones, and Terry Sedgewick.

All my love to Devin, Connor, and Liam. Finally, and most important, love and thanks to Calene, my research assistant, travel partner, and wife—I waited my whole life for you. Thanks for bashing on, regardless.
